Underpants!

The numbered selection of mens' underwear pales in comparison to the vast, endless, and colorful variety of womens' underwear. The differences are striking and shocking! The general consensus is that men don't really care about what their underwear looks like, design-wise. As long it's functional and clean, all's good, I hear. The numerous options in womens' underwear is so dizzying because the styles vary so greatly. Great arguments consummate over functionality versus style. Thongs offer little coverage and minimal panty lines while bikini panties offer a waistline just above the hip and a leg opening that cuts right down the butt cheeks. Hip huggers hug the hips and sometimes offer more bum coverage, but sometimes not. How underwear fits isn't only dependent on the cut of the style, but also on the very 3-dimensional human form. Underwear is typically loose on me because I have no bum. Really. I look kinda like a ruler. But I like it.

G-string deserve a whole paragraph on their own because so many sub-categories exist! G-strings are similar to thongs in that they offer minimal coverage, perfect for wearing under tighter trousers to eliminate unsightly panty lines but the essential difference is the amount of fabric. In G-strings, a small strip or triangle of fabric covers the front and a string rests between the buttocks (leading G-strings to be coined "butt floss") while thongs have a strip on fabric in the back offering sometimes substantial coverage of the butt crack. G-strings sometimes sport expensive decorations like rhinestones or golden chains. I really think this extravaganza really illuminates the plainness of mens' underwear.

Mens' underwear is mainly bought in packs while women tend to sort through and pick several pairs individually. Most mens' underwear is cotton or a cotton blend. Womens' underwear, however, includes polyester, Lycra, acetate, and other such synthetics. Personally, I'm a 99%-100% cotton fan. But I have nothing against those who chose others. Women love options and maybe that's why there are so many more styles of womens' underwear than mens'.

I don't think it's so much that women like more choices, I think it's a remnant of misogynistic culture that dictates to women how they should look and what extent they need to go to in order to look good. In England in the 15/1600s, women used mercury (really, the first precursor of blush) to make their cheeks redder (I believe). Centuries later, has it stopped? Nope. Still trying to make cheeks and lips redder, but with newer technologies, now it's plump your lips with this topical collagen treatment! Instead of embracing a unique, individualistic sense of internal beauty, a lot of women's culture still revolves around ways to fit into typical "beauty" molds in order to make oneself more appealing. Hollywood and major corporations have been catering the same things to women for a long time. In "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," Kate Hudson's character writes that one article in order to maybe travel the world and write about important issues, like genocide, and her editor informs her that though the article put her on the map, those types of articles just aren't popular, but she can write about anything that deals with makeup, relationships with men, hair... Even the film itself proves a point. The rom-com genre caters mostly to women. By creating numerous types of underwear, selling them individually, they're reinforcing the idea that yes, panty lines do matter to everyone who's in the know, but if you buy this thong or g-string for $47, you can easily join the in crowd.

Just my two cents.

But as for guys, it is true that there is a limited number of types of underwear. Boxers, Boxer Briefs, Whitie Tighties, and Jock Straps seem to cover all the bases. Unlike most women underwear however, men's underwear comes with a variety of designs on the boxers. My mother bought me a pair of Spongebob-designed Boxers as a gag gift. Anything from Super Heroes to Sports Stars are emblazoned on our backsides of the boxers.
